The National Leadership Centre runs a series of events and opportunities to support public sector leaders to connect with their peers, share experiences and develop their skills. The events are only open to Chief Executives within the NLC network, and eligibility is checked as part of registration.

‘How to…’ is a series of online workshops focused on skills development, designed to provide you with the chance to discuss both practical governance matters and softer leadership skills with your peers.

Systems Working is a combination of in person and online events, each tackling a challenging and complex issue in UK policy development. The series has been developed based on your feedback, and will give you the opportunity to interact and collaborate with your leadership peers on the key issues affecting the public sector.
The ‘Leadership Journeys’ series showcases the experiences of the NLC Network members. Speakers share their views on leadership styles and pedagogy, alongside the experiences, achievements and challenges that shaped their careers. This series is designed to provide inspiration for your own leadership approaches and careers, and illustrate innovative responses to leadership challenges by fellow NLC Network members.
Adaptive Leadership with John Henderson

John Henderson joined Staffordshire County Council as Chief Executive in May 2015 after a career in the British Army. John shared his views on adaptive leadership and how sector switching has allowed him to explore different skills with network members. He also addressed how leaders are having to change their leadership approaches through the pandemic and into the next normal, before an open discussion with leaders attending the event.
What COP26 means for the public sector

In November, the UK hosted the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26). Delegates heard directly from the COP26 team and network peers on some of the fantastic initiatives happening across the public sector.

For the first event in the ‘Systems Working’ series Alex Chisholm was joined by Caleb Deeks and Pamela Dow for a discussion on the Declaration on Government Reform and how the Civil Service is using it to support better collaboration across the whole public sector.

The educational, social and economic impact of COVID-19 on young people

Our final online event in the COVID-19 series focussed on the impact COVID-19 has had on young people. Hosted by Sir Peter Wanless, the event explored the educational, social and economic impact of COVID-19 on young people. Through facilitated breakout sessions, we gave network member the opportunity to discuss this topic with public sector peers and navigate the complexities as a collective system.
Leading During Covid; A Discussion with Martin Hewitt

The NLC was joined by Martin Hewitt, Chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, who discussed the challenges of leading during the Covid-19 crisis, and how public sector leaders could collaborate more effectively to better deliver services for the public. He also covered issues such as how we have seen almost unprecedented restrictions on personal freedom, and what this and other factors mean for public trust in policing.
Post Covid-19 Economy with Cat Little, 22 April
The NLC was joined by a wide group of CEOs to hear from Cat Little as she discussed the economy post Covid-19. Cat is the Director General of Public Spending at HM Treasury, and Head of the Government Finance Function.
Finding Calm with Ruby Wax, 12 February
A wide group of CEO-level leaders were joined by Ruby Wax. Ruby holds a Master’s degree in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy. Combining this with comedy and mindfulness, she aims to help the world find calm in this hectic 21st century.
Inclusive leadership with Deborah Cadman, 28 January
The National Leadership Centre team hosted an online event on Inclusive Leadership. It was chaired by Deborah Cadman OBE, CEO of the West Midlands Combined Authority, alongside panellists Lord Victor Adebowale and Darra Singh.
